IIMUN KODAIKANAL 2016

Journal:

The Indian International Model United Nations, IIMUN, was held at Kodia international school at Kodiakanal and this was my first ever iimun conference as I was quite excited about attending this IIMUN. I wanted to attend this IIMUN since I had previously missed out on the Coimbatore IIMUN which was held at C.S. Academy, Coimbatore.

I was placed under the committee, Joint Parliamentary Session (JPS) where I was representing Mr. Narendra Jadhav who is a chief economist. The agenda for my committee was reviewing reservations systems in India where everyone represents each member in India. We just had 2 days of training sessions in our school and our CAS Coordinator Mr. Rolf explained about rules of procedure and other things we need know about the IIMUN. I had researched about my delegate and his relation to reservation in India as he doesn't like about the caste reservation in India. I also prepared my opening speech moreover I also got some moderated caucus topics.

Day 1-21/10/2016

On morning 9am we started the bus from our school and in between we had our lunch. Then reached kodiakanal by 4pm where we went to a hotel provided by the IIMUN and we were dressed up with our formals, suit and tie and soon, we had arrived at the venue. Today was the opening ceremony which would be held at 5pm in the evening. My friends and I were excited before entering to the hall as it was our first experience. When I had entered the hall, I was surprised by the number of people present and we were late to the ceremony as the welcome speech was already started by them. Then a performance of classical dance and both western dance had taken place. In a matter of minutes, the lighting of the lamp had taken place which was done by the director of the IIMUN and few other special guests from both school and IIMUN.

We had our first committee session and our committee was based on reviewing reservations in India as everyone were representing each member from various parties such as (BJP, Congress,AIDMK) and also economists. I was representing Narendra Jadhav who is an economist.  However, our half of the committee session had passed as the chair (head of the committee) had been explaining the rules of procedures and other stuffs.

Soon, we had moved on to the general speakers list(Opening Speech), where each delegate would be presenting a 1 minute speech on the views of reservations in India. The speakers weren't presented in alphabetical order, as the chair was randomly calling our names to present the speech. I was one of the last to present my speech, I was initially afraid , Once my chance to speak came but as I started my speech, I presented it with authority and power, although my stance on the agenda was against most of the delegates in the committee. After I had completed my speech, a few other delegates had completed their speeches and we had proceeded to moderated caucuses (formal debate). The committee had suggested around 20 topics to speak on, but only 3 topics were chosen and had the majority vote and I gave one topic which didn't pass. The moderated caucus was for almost 10-15 minutes for each topic and I spoken in one of the topic the happened in moderated caucus.  Then soon, we had our lunch break where I started talking to other delegates and found new friends.

After lunch, two more committee sessions were left. The next committee session had started. We had opened an unmediated caucus (informal debate) where we can make use of Internet and few other stuffs moreover we had been discussing our viewpoints with other delegates. During this informal debate, we had formed into blocs, which are basically groups of people who have similar viewpoints. We divided into two blocs and our bloc had the least members because we were against the reservation system in India. After that my favorite part came which was the debate and for this also we divided into blocs, our bloc just had 4 members and other bloc where rest of the delegates. I spoke very well in the debate and our team also were equally contributed and other bloc were also very well spoke but our bloc had least member so, our chair told both bloc contributed equally but still our bloc won this debate. Furthermore, we had finished a few moderated caucuses.

After the session had ended, our chair told us to do the working paper as homework to submit tomorrow.

We went to our allotted hotel rooms to change our dress for the most awaited DJ Night and I was quite excited about the DJ NIGHT. Although only few of my friends had come to the dance in the DJ Night, it was entertaining as we danced to our favorite Tamil songs after a long and tiring day, I was really exhausted, however, on the other hand, it was a great experience for me.

Then comes the most shocking thing which was midnight crisis, where chairs came to our room and   awoke us which were my favorite part and I couldn't take part in the crisis due to the cold temperature.

Last and Final day- 23/10/16

Today would be the final day of the IIMUN sessions. Although I was fairly unhappy about the model United Nations ending today, I was enthusiastic for the committee sessions today as we would be submitting our working papers and constructing our resolution today. All the delegates were in same bloc so, we were confident that we would be able to pass our resolution.
It took quite long for us to prepare the Draft solutions.

AFTER LUNCH...

The chair as allotted us 15 mins to create the draft and present to him. So after 15 mins. We had chits passing through and one of bloc member should read the draft that we have presented. The chits were passing through the comments to the chair so that he could modify or edit the point. When the opposition party had less members that had doubts going on. So we faced 1 on 1 challenge to get whether this point goes correct or not.

The afternoon session, which was the last one, had begun. In this session, each bloc had presented their resolution stating and explaining each point. Once each bloc had finished their explanation of the resolution, the voting procedure. Our resolutions were passed and the chair declared we have passed the resolution.  So we had great  round applause around ourselves it was a great experience which would help me later when attending future MUN's.

After all sessions had concluded, we had moved on to the closing ceremony where awards would be presented. I did not receive any award but however our school had won the best delegation award, where we got a big trophy and one of my friend got best photography i was so proud of him. It was our school gained pride and recognition among the schools in Kodaikanal and through Tamilnadu. It was the best moment and great experience in my life.

 Reflection:

Overall, IIMUN was a new and great experience for me. Throughout this adventure, I had faced many obstacles and I learned how to overcome the difficulties. Initially I felt that IIMUN would be difficult as I had not done much research and I was not very clear on how the IIMUN exactly works. Moreover, I was nervous as I was not a very good public speaker.

As the agenda for the committee, JPS,was little tough but I was very much interested in the topic as it involves many politics into it and had lot of information to collect.

Joining IIMUN helped me recognize and explore the outside world, which helped me meet different kinds of people and moreover, during the conference, I was able to interact with new people and make friends which helped me in communication skills.. Additionally, IIMUN has increased my confidence of public speaking and has helped me overcome stage fear.

As my bloc consisted of the least members, it helped me develop leadership skills in order to convince the majority of the delegates. Although there was only one team doing their resolution it got passed.  I had learned from my mistakes and how to overcome difficulties. So, overall IIMUN was very helpful to me I enjoyed attending this IIMUN.
